Once a Spartan, Forever Elite: Wondolowski ’01 Enters Hall of Fame

De La Salle has always been a place where greatness is built—and over the weekend, one of our own reached the very top of American soccer.

Spartan alum Chris Wondolowski '01 has officially been inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame, cementing a legacy that began right here in Concord and grew into one of the most remarkable careers in the history of the game.

Wondolowski's journey is the definition of perseverance. A multi-sport athlete at De La Salle—also competing in track and cross country—he wasn't heavily recruited out of high school. He went on to star at Chico State Wildcats before entering Major League Soccer as an overlooked draft pick. What followed was nothing short of legendary.

Over a 17-year professional career, including 14 seasons with the San Jose Earthquakes, "Wondo" became Major League Soccer's all-time leading goal scorer with 171 goals—a record that still stands today. Along the way, he earned league MVP honors, multiple Golden Boots, Best XI selections, and All-Star appearances, establishing himself as one of the most consistent and dangerous forwards the league has ever seen.

On the international stage, Wondolowski proudly represented the United States Men's National Team, earning 35 caps and competing in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. His impact extended beyond goals—he became a symbol of dedication, humility, and doing things the right way.

His induction into the Hall of Fame isn't just a personal achievement—it's a milestone for the entire De La Salle community. It's a reminder to every current Spartan that the path to greatness doesn't require hype or headlines—it requires heart, consistency, and a commitment to excellence.

Chris Wondolowski is forever part of De La Salle history—and now, forever part of American soccer history.

Once a Spartan, always a Spartan.
