Carlos Sumulong brings an unparalleled level of experience, leadership, and passion to the De La Salle Wrestling Program. A decorated collegiate athlete and a distinguished coach, Coach Sumulong enters each season with a legacy of excellence and a relentless commitment to developing young men on and off the mat.
As a student-athlete at San Francisco State University, Sumulong was a standout performer—earning NCAA All-American honors, winning two conference titles, western regional title, and serving as team captain for the 1997 NCAA National Championship team. Sumulong was also a 2x Greco Roman All American and 2x Freestyle All American. His contributions to SFSU athletics were recognized with his induction into the SFSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009. A member of the prestigious 100-Win Club, he also received the Areté Award for excellence in both academics and athletics.
Coach Sumulong brings 28 years of coaching experience at all levels of the sport. He is the founder of the Walnut Creek Wrestling Club, Foothill Middle School Wrestling Club, and served as the varsity head coach at Northgate High School for 14 years. During his tenure at Northgate, he led the program to its first-ever DFAL tournament title and captured the school’s first NCS Duals banners in 2008 and 2009. He also served as an assistant coach at CYC from 1993–2004 and returned to coach at the CYC middle school level 2 class from 2014–2021 where he produced multiple Norcal TOC Champions and medalists.
At De La Salle, Sumulong served as an assistant coach for a combined 11 years (2001–2004, 2014–2022) before being named head coach in 2022. Under his mentorship and as part of the program’s long-term coaching tradition, De La Salle Wrestling has earned 18 league titles, 14 NCS team championships, and 16 NCS dual meet titles. He has coached 45 NCS champions, 22 CIF state medalists, and 2 CIF state champions. He is the camp director for De La Salle youth wrestling and also the founder of the Bill Martell Invitational (established in 2009) and The 300, Inc. club team.
Off the mat, Coach Sumulong is a respected leader in the health and fitness industry. He is the CEO and owner of VQ Fit Pros and serves as a peak performance coach and international fitness conference speaker. He is the author of Cutting Weight 101: A Step-by-Step Guide to Weight Loss for Sports Performance, and has been a multiple-time recipient of Best Personal Trainer in the East Bay by Diablo Magazine. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Exercise and Movement Science and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS, since 1998). He has also served as a presenter for the Philippine Olympic Committee’s Strength and Conditioning Summit and was an instructor for the World Instructor Training School at Cal State University East Bay.
Carlos is married to Heather Sumulong, and together they have two children: Logan, a De La Salle alumnus (Class of 2019) and University of California Santa Barbara graduate, and Paige, a student at the University of California, Berkeley.
With a foundation built on championship experience, elite-level coaching, and a heart for mentorship, Coach Sumulong continues to lead the Spartans with integrity, excellence, and purpose.
