After surviving the hail storm on Thursday and a late match against Dublin High the Spartans traveled to Santa Barbara leaving at 6 AM on Friday morning. We had a great ride to Santa Barbara and checked into our hotel 1 block from the beach. Coach Mark had scouted out a great restaurant right on the Wharf with outdoor tables. Many of the Spartans had never been to Santa Barbara. We had a great lunch.
We then headed out to Courts at Santa Barbara High School and Knowlwood Tennis Club for one match Friday afternoon. The Spartans had 5 doubles teams and 3 of the 5 came away with victories. The entire team then headed over to Knowlwood Tennis Club for a BBQue with several of the other teams. The BBQue was done by 615 so we headed out of the hotel and went to see ‘Black Panther’ as a team in a downtown movie theater. Thanks to Coach Mark for treating all of the kids to the movie.
Saturday morning each of our 5 teams had two matches starting at 830 and 10:15. Again the Spartans won more matches than we lost against stiff competition from Santa Barbara area schools.
The Perera’s, the von Savoye’s (celebrating their Anniversary) and Hiromi Kubota were able to make the trip down and enjoy the tournament. Chris Easley was also along for the trip and took half of the team with him. After the matches were concluded we went back to the Wharf and had another delicious outdoor lunch looking over the Santa Barbara Harbour.
What a great trip and we’ve already been invited for next year’s tournament.
