The Spartans traveled to Dublin for a league match on Thursday afternoon. The weather all day long was back and forth. It looked like it might be rained out but we decided to go ahead and try to play. Some of the team arrived in Dublin and started to warm up. The weather got real nasty and it started to hail on our boys. At least that’s the story according to Ravin, one of our Senior Captains.
Everybody was thinking that we could call it a day and reschedule the match. The hail stopped, the wind picked up, and the sun came out. Coach Jason from Dublin and his boys started skeeging the courts off. They seems to lose a little interest and our boys picked up the slack. We eventually got two of the courts dry and we started off with #1 doubles, Senior Daniel von Savoye and Sophomore Anthony Kindy-Baillot. We then had #2 doubles start with Fresman JR Easley and Sophomore Shamal Perera. We were then able to get some more courts open and put on Senior Rick Trapp, Senior Ravin Wijesuriya, and Junior Kyle Haley, We decided that we woujld do 8 game no-add prosets to try and see if we could get the match in.
First off was #1 doubles von Savoye/Kindy-Baillot with a great 8-5 win. They were attacking the net, putting away volleys, and getting their serves in. The keys to good doubles play. They played especially well considering the windy cold conditions. DLS 1, Dublin 0.
Next off the court was Ravin Wijesuriya. We were a little worried about Ravin after he was cruising to a 7-0 lead he gave up 4 straight games. Fortunately he was able to close it out 8-5. DLS 2, Dublin 0.
Kyle Haley was playing at #5 singles and had trouble playing a much smaller opponent who kept pushing the ball but getting it in. Kyle made too many errors and fell 8-4. DLS 2, Dublin 1.
Rick Trapp was down 0-3 in his match and we were worried the match was going to be all tied up. Rick listened to Coach Mark tell him to start hitting out on the ball and come to the net. Rick did a great job of turning it and won the match 8-5. DLS 3, Dublin 1.
Our super freshman Ben Beernink was playing #4 singles and was in control of his match the entire time. Ben cruised to a 8-2 win hardly making any unforced errors and playing to his opponent’s weaknesses. Ben hit some great drop shots and then some great lobs which were tough to hit considering the wind.
DLS 4, Dublin 1.
Ryan Sheffield was in complete control of his match at #6 singles and he totally dominated with an 8-1 win. Shef was getting lots of first serves in and was getting on the offensive from the start on the majority of the points. DLS 5, Dublin 1.
At #2 doubles the longest match of the day was going on. Perera/Easley are becoming quite a team but they were playing a tough team from Dublin. Lots of long rallies and long games. They both getting to the net at times and volleyed very well. They’re understanding that the need to get their first serve in and avoid at all costs double faults. They had a couple of match points and were finally able to win 9-7. DLS 6, Dublin1.
At #3 doubles Clinton/Kindy-Baillot were struggling and giving up too many free points. The wind had picked up and they were having trouble keeping up their serve percentage. That combination will be a lot to overcome and turn in a victory. They ended up losing their battle 4-8. DLS 6, Dublin 2.
All that was left was our Super Junior Jeff Kubota and was struggling with a abdominal strain. We weren’t sure he was going to even play. He couldn’t resist and put on a clinic. He must have know we were freezing cold so he picked up the tempo and won easily 8-0. DLS 7, Dublin 2.
The Spartans had their first win after losing to Amador Valley and San Ramon Valley. They had to get home and get packed as we were leaving for Santa Barbara at 6 the next morning.
